[Serious] What is your "then everybody clapped" story that's actually true?

when I was in my last year of high school, there was "the list" which some of the graduating students would get involved in. It was a list of very obnoxious, and risky things that you had to do, for no desernable reason outside of tradition. A bunch of students got involved in trying to complete the list, and it ended in one student getting hit by a car. He lived, but he was seriously injured. There was then an assembly called, and my entire graduating class had to sit in the auditorium, and get scolded about how that guy wasn't personally responsible for what he did, and ALL of us were at fault for creating such a culture, even though I didn't know who the guy was, and while I recognized his face after seeing a picture, i'd never talked to him in my life.

someone else (not me) stood up, and then said "I didn't do shit. I wasn't out there wasting my time on that. I was at my house studying for my exams like a good boy. How many of us were actually there" That lead to an applause and overall uproar, that ended the assembly, because it was no longer organized enough for them to firmly tell us to stay in our seats anymore.
