When I was 17, I decided to explore using my new ability to drive. This was before GPS smartphones.

I didn't intend to go far from my home, but after taking turn after turn, I suddenly realized I was lost. Though I was on paved roads, it quickly felt desolate and to make matters worse, I had a spotty signal on my Nokia. I began to get more and more frustrated as hours passed and when the low fuel light came on, I was in a panic. I decided to park and wait and see if anyone came. It was getting dark and almost 10 hours later when a man on a riding lawn mower informed me of how to get to a nearby gas station.

The shocking thing is that I was just over 10 miles away from my house. The gas station I'd been directed to is one I knew well. But, I had never been to the area I was lost, though, and TRUST ME, it is confusing.
