[serious] What's it like to go from working to middle class?

As others have said, it's nice but not that much different. I don't worry about finances as much as I used to. I live in San Francisco but grew up in and went to college in the rust belt, coming from a working class family. We weren't dirt poor or anything and always got by, but by no means was growing up luxurious. My vision may be a bit skewed but:

  • I don't stress about having to pay rent or putting food on the table. I know owning a house isn't in my near-term future, but hopefully I'll be able to save up for a condo at some point.

  • Perks of the job are nice. We offer unlimited vacation and are pretty lenient about working from home. As long as my work gets done, I can show as much or as little face time as I want. This is great if I need to go to the doctor, dentist, etc. Much different from seeing my parents stress about having to take a whole day off of work go to the doctor. My parents wonder if I even work since I seem to be home one or two days a week.

  • Speaking of health though, that's improved. Once I got decent dental insurance I made sure to go get all of my cavities filled in. I tend to eat a bit healthier than I used to growing up, as I'm not always buying frozen meals, junk food, or deep frying anything. I know you can "eat healthy" on a budget too, I'm more relaxed than I was when I was working to make ends meet and can spend an hour or two making a full meal.

  • I live in the city, so I bought a bike to get me to and from work. Not because I can't afford a car, but because I actually enjoy riding my bike. I also upgraded from the cheap bikes we used to ride as kids and put down for a somewhat decent road bike.

  • When I do buy something, I try to buy the best one I can afford at the time, but still do my research. For Instance, I've upgraded my housewares from Ikea to Crate and Barrel. Clothes - I've moved on from H&M to J Crew. Also spending $150-$200 on a pair of decent shoes (Campers, Cole Hahn) compared to a $40 pair from [Nordstrom Rack/Marshalls/Ross] is worth it considering how much better they look, how much more comfortable they are, and how long they last.

Basically I have a bit more expendable income and that's about it. Also, my employer seems to trust me.
