[Serious] When's the last time you were truly afraid, like a child in a dark room?

7 years ago my family went on vacation to Mexico. There was 6 of us on the trip: my parents, myself and my buddy (16 at the time), my cousin (15/f), and my sister (12). As a result we had to take 2 cabs when we went into town every night. My mom and I would always split up becuase she was fluent in Spanish and I knew enough to converse.

This particular time I asked to go with my mom so I could show her how much my Spanish had improved over the trip. In the other cab was my dad, sister, and cousin. I tell their cab driver to follow us, and he does for the first 10 minutes. All of a sudden the other driver makes an abrupt turn and speeds off in a different direction in what appeared to be a sketchy area. My mom asks our driver (I think his name was Miguel) what the other driver was doing. Miguel attempts to radio their cab. No response. Radios again what felt like 100 times. No response. (For some reason mom and dad didn't have their cell phones) Miguel tells us he has a bad feeling about the situation because of some reason I can't remember. Now we're terrified. We go to our destination and they're nowhere to be seen.

Miguel sees how visibly shaken we are, clearly fearing the worst. He kindly takes us to a spot where a bunch of drivers are located and gets out to ask them if they knew the other cab driver. My mom overhears one of the guys suggest to Miguel that he knew of the other cab driver and it wasn't out of the question that he might have kidnapped my dad, sister, and cousin for some reason. Now my mom's hysterical, my friend is doing his best to keep it together, and I start to quietly lose my 16 year old mind.

At that moment, every horrifying thought I could imagine consumed my mind. They're all dead. My sister and cousin are being raped and my dad is getting his shit kicked in, powerless to stop it. Really fucked up shit man. At that moment I was certain I would never see them again. Total helplessness. Still get sick to my stomach whenever I think about it.

Anyway, they were all fine. We found them 2 blocks away from the originally agreed upon resturant an hour and half later totally clueless to the fact we were looking for them. They had churros though, and as much as I wanted to punch my dad in the face for being so nonchalant about everything, I wanted that churro more.

tl;dr Thought Mexican cab driver raped and murdered my family but they were actually just eating some churros.
