[Serious] Who's the most mysterious person you ever met? What made them mysterious?

Was in my last year in school, doing cadets at school when I was without warning picked out and told to come interview with this old guy (like 80s atleast), this guy was sitting in the school library in with all the lights turned off and the curtains closed, the library had been cleared out just for him

He knew who I was, he even knew my family history of military service and apparently recognised the name/connection I had to one he knew somehow

The guy wore a suit and had 1960s style big thick black glasses but he told me to only refer to him as colonel, I never got his name, he pulled out a large A3/A2 style ledger which was clearly very old and flicked thriught he pages, there were line of names and other stuff on each line which must have gone back atleast decades

He asked me what I wanted to do in the services, I told him I wanted to be a pilot but I was unsure my eyesight would make it through the test. He writing this all down in the ledger still in the dark he then tells me how to essentially cheat the eye exam for the military

He then stops ask if I would ever be interested in other areas of the services (didn't specify what) and then stops writing looks at me across the table and asks would I die for my country

I said I'd rather not die but if it came to it then sure

I don't think that was the answer he was hoping for as he then shuts the ledger and ends the interview/meeting and that was it just like that he was gone

I asked after and no one else had been interviewed and even the officers denied even sending me for this interview

I often wonder what would have happened if I had given the answer he hoped for and who in fact this guy was
