[serious] Why do world powers have to fight each other instead of working together to help humanity advance?

I want you to get ten people in a room together and try and get them to agree on the correct way to prepare a coffee.

They HAVE to agree at the end of the day.

I am talking the amount of milk, the amount of water, the amount of sugar, they type of coffee bean used, the sort of machine you use to make the coffee......

And at the end of the day, the way you have decided to have the coffee is the only way any of them can drink coffee in the future.

It's going to be next to impossible to do it. Some people may compromise on the amount of sugar, with or without milk, if they want it made quickly, or slowly, and there will even be people who don't really drink coffee but you know they'll have an opinion on it.

Now imagine that same situation but for more complex issues that the world faces.

Look at climate change. By most estimates it's going to fuck us pretty hard. Yet there are people out there that don't agree. Some people look forward to it because it opens up trade routes in the arctic, opens up natural resources for exploitation, makes some land suddenly viable for farming.

For others it's going to be devastating and the end of their way of life, it will cost trillions to prepare for it and someones going to have to pay for it. But who? Who will pay for it?
