Seriously, WTF is wrong with me?

You mention evolution in your post so I will tell you a theory I have. There isn't any evidence to support this but it makes some sense. In the ancient evolutionary past you had 3 options.

1) Attract a mate through mutual attraction. E.g. being the best hunter in the tribe, or the most intelligent / influential / good looking etc.

2) Go to war with neighboring tribes, win, and take their women.

3) Suicide

I believe that this is why, when we are alone for extended periods of time and forced to witness other people's relationships on a daily basis, there are two responses. One is anger (this leads to option 2 above), the other is depression (this leads to option 3). Option 2 is in fact the same option 3 in most cases, and unsuccessful wars would result in death. This theory also explains the prevalence of stockholm syndrome in women, and their willingness to stand by extremely abusive partners when better alternatives are easily available.

In modern society we do not have option 2 due to law enforcement etc (and rightly so). But the consequence is that the only remaining option available is the depressed/suicidal thought loop.

So to sum it up: If you want to think about this evolutionarily, think of yourself as the warrior who never got the opportunity to go to war. There used to be a purpose to you but modern technology and statecraft has rendered it obsolete.

For the record I do not endorse war or men forcing themselves on women, this is a purely hypothetical example to try to understand deep seated human psychological patterns based on the way things used to be in the ancient past.
