Server shut down is the 18th of January

PlayStation Plus doesn't have anything to do with a first-party studio's budget when it comes to server maintenance. That money goes to services provided by Plus, such as the "free" games and maintaining the PlayStation Network. I'm not sure how much of the PlayStation Network you remember from the PS3 era, but I think the $60/year has done wonders to the network infrastructure. And it was only $50/year until people kept complaining about the quality of the "free" games, which have improved since the price increase.

It's unfortunate the game didn't sell as well as we all would like, but it's a niche game that was a sequel of a niche game that was originally made for a niche handheld system. I don't think anyone expected it to sell millions. Kinda like another Sony-assisted studio via Japan Studio that developed a game that would eventually go on to sell millions of copies and create the Souls genre--which is also having to shut down its online server this year.

The fact of the matter is we don't know the budget Project Siren and Japan Studio had set aside for the servers. Maybe they would have had a bigger server budget had the game sold more? We simply don't know anything other than the press release and what our feelings are.
