"Several of my cardiac patients told me recently that they switched providers because their cardiologist told them they needed to lose weight and it hurt their feelings." (x-post via an excluded subreddit)

I switched doctors because I told her that I felt like I was going to do something bad and asked if I could get different medication - something that I had told her twice before - seeing as mine wasn't helping all that much and I have a history of attempted suicide. She told me to start taking them before bed instead of in the morning (and was the one who told me to take them in the morning instead of at night when I previously raised issues with her) and to call some kind of CBT support centre that takes about two months to actually call you back.

I ended up in hospital the next week because I did, in fact, do something bad. The next time I was in the clinic I asked for a different doctor.

My new doctor got me an emergency appointment with the psychiatric board, changed my prescription, gave me a list of books to read so that I could understand my condition and how people deal with it, and sent me to a day hospital to help me learn better coping mechanisms and what it is that my medication does for me. It also turns out that the phone CBT group wouldn't actually deal with me anyway because they don't work with people past a certain level of severity.

Along the way I also learnt that calorie counting is fun and took up swimming five days a week, after acknowledging that I actually live right down the road from a pool. Living a healthy and active lifestyle was something that both the doctor and day hospital encouraged people to look into, alongside Mindfulness, as it can really help some people with mental health issues pull themselves together. I was dancing on the line of normal/overweight for a while and always wanted to be strong like bull, anyway.

So I ended up going from one doctor who told me fuck all, to another who told me all the things I needed to know, including how exercise and healthier eating habits would help.

My new doctor also gave me a hug when I was done with the day hospital because she's just a lovely person.

tl;dr - Changed doctor, was told by multiple medical practitioners that exercise and healthy living would help, didn't throw a pissy fit and followed their advice. Also got a hug.
