[Shelburne] There was still strong internal debate on whether the team should pay $45 million in the final year of a deal to a 37-year-old player(Chris Paul).

I dont think the concern was just with CP3 independently. I think it came down to.

1) Blake Griffin isnt a lock to resign and with CP3's interest in Houston growign he probably wanted a clear 5 year full max with an NTC and he wanted it now. He wasnt going to wait on Blake to see if LAC would offer it up.

2) DeAndre Jordan is a FA in 2019 and eligible for a super max. Whatever he gets it will likely be around $30 mil. And he's also no lock to resign; we already saw how close he came to leaving in 2019.

3) They need Blake/CP3/DAJ all 3 of them to really be a team worth bringing back. Lose 1 and its useless.

4) But DAJ/Blake/CP3 will make around $100-105 mil make it even harder now to build a real team aorund them than before. And those guys will all age and decline.

Hence I dont think in and of itself paying him at age 36-37 is the be all end all. It's just this wasnt the team or situation in general worth paying a guy like him that money for. You are basically doing it because you think years 1-3 with him will be worth it; but you cant justify it would be in this case.
