I won't even try to defend them but just saying holy books (with an s) of Islam, is enough to make anyone feel wary when debating you. same for quoting http://www.thereligionofpeace.com . You seem quite informed in the matter so I would ask, for each good verse in the bible, how many are there in the Quran (that's something you won't find in http://www.thereligionofpeace.com , will you?). Should I feel that all you say is wrong when someone does the opposite and bring all the nice verses of Islam and all the hate speech of the bible? should I feel that the good seeds of Christianity don't exist just because a bunch of people are raising "god hates gays" and "death to gays".
Some verses of Quran (please forgive the lack of examples as I am not religious myself and it's just some of the examples I remembered from my talks with my Moroccan roommate):
[42:40] The recompense for a crime shall be its equivalence, but whoever forgives and makes right, then his reward is upon God. He does not like the wrongdoers.
[5:32] For this reason did We prescribe to the children of Israel that whoever slays a soul, unless it be for manslaughter or for mischief in the land, it is as though he slew all men; and whoever keeps it alive, it is as though he kept alive all men; and certainly Our messengers came to them with clear arguments, but even after that many of them certainly act extravagantly in the land.
of course, people would be less open to hear your arguments if you cherry pick the parts you want to talk about, especially since most of them aren't even general rules but guidelines for the few people who embraced Islam at it's start and were met with violence from the prophet's tribe. Quran didn't say fight those who have a different faith, it says fight those who fight you in faith, it's all about letting the others give the first hit:
[2:190]Fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for God loves not aggressors.
[60:8]Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just.
and if we combine it with the fact that each transgression should have an equivalent punishment, then no, those people you hear about them in the news every day have nothing to do with Islam.
