When there were indentured servants from Ireland piling up in America, the wealthy worried that the African slaves and Irish indentured servants would join up to overpower them. So they decided to try spreading racist rhetoric about the slaves among the servants, and to convince them that the slaves were somehow to blame for their lot in life.

It worked, and the indentured servants had someone to feel superior to. Someone to hate the way the wealthy Americans hated them.

This is just the latest chapter in a very long story where the power elite make us wage war on one another instead of looking at who is to blame for our sorrows.
