You know, I know I mustn’t be the best at my job, but I am a football coach and I’ve spent most of my last 8-10 years watching and analysing football matches and statistics.

In my opinion, the goalkeeper position has been a weakness for Man United since at least 2017-2018. David makes spectacular saves, and it has also cost Man United points. We do concede plenty of chances due to our defense not being one of the best, and it’s fair to argue that we should see Ter Stegen (for example) trying to save the shots we concede. But one of the several weaknesses we have is that David does not organise his defense properly. He doesn’t help himself, because he is too passive for the modern game at the highest level. He reacts, but that’s not enough. A top GK needs to act.

We all know his issues with distribution and, sometimes, basic foot technique.

And we also know that he craves returning to Madrid, and that the attractive we have for him to stay is money. I’m not saying he doesn’t care for Man United nor that he’s a mercenary - I love David de Gea. But it’d be like you or I not finding our jobs fulfilling and wanting to move on, but they offer to quadruple our salaries. We’d probably stay for a little while. That’s what David has been doing for years.

I don’t know if Dean is the answer, cos there’s loads of rumours and I don’t know if he already burned his bridge with the manager, but Man United need a top, top goalkeeper.
