A shot of a young Winston Churchill, 1895 [500x648]

Full dress uniform (Churchill is wearing the full dress of a Hussar in this photo ( officers had gold lacing, other ranks yellow) - but for many regiments this would be the famous scarlet tunics) was phased out after the First World War on grounds of expense, though it was still worn on certain occasions. Up until the war it had still been issued to all ranks of all regiments and corps, in addition to the khaki uniform that is now also a formal dress - No. 2 "Service Dress". Household Division regiments retained their full dress (after the Second World War post-mechanisation the Royal Horse Artillery raised a troop to provide gun salutes who wear a full dress similar to that of hussars). Bands and corps of drums/pipes and drums also still wear full dress. In the 1950s a new form of dress - No. 2 Dress "Blues - was introduced as the most formal dress for most units and was based on what had been an officers only undress/patrol uniform.
