Should I buy the game? Is there an active player base?

You know you're asking this in the Reflex Sub? But i'll be the mean guy here. I say: don't.

I spent around 300hours in this game and i have a lot of experience in all kind of arena shooters so AFPS is nothing new to me and in general i'm doing quite well in them. At first i was really hyped but with each update of this game i realised that it is heading to a direction i don't like anymore. It started with the "no textures" Idea and it ended with the Controls which are (in my opinion) still too "floaty and heavy". Yes it is a nice game. But with perfectly alive game like Quake Live and free Alternatives like Xonotic, Warsow, Quetoo and comercial games like diabotical just around the corner my personal opinion is that it isn't worth it. Reflex is by no means a bad game BUT it has a brutal community which will stomp you as a new player over and over again. It's just a fact. I'm not gonna lie to you, if you have no AFPS History you must be kinda masochistic to learn this game. And i don't know if it will be worth your time and effort to waste like hunderts of hours into a game with a small community like reflex (that is your decision). So the advice would be: Get the game if you have friends to play... But again: if you have friends to play why not picking up a free game like the ones i mentiond before and see how much you guys like this "kind" of games? The best reason for Reflex however is "race". Race is fun as long as you have some strafing knowledge or spend a couple of hours into learning it. The Steam Workshop is the best advantage reflex has over free alternatives in my opinion.
