Why should children have the right to religious independence when they are not independent in most other ways?

"I disagree 100% that children should be able to choose for themselves"

  • The "choose for themselves" applies to later in life when they reach the age of reason. If they've been brainwashed since birth to think one way, then they're going to be heavily biased to reject others without proper consideration of them.

"It’s a parents job to protect their children and steer them away from harmful behaviors."

  • And if the religion is harmful? I'd argue all religions ("religion" in the narrow sense of the word) are harmful. Some are more harmful than others, but all in some way detach people from reality.

"You wouldn’t let a kid play with matches or run out into the street."

  • And I wouldn't let a child read a bible or look upon pictures of a man being crucified to death to save people from what he'll have done to them (fiery torture) if they don't obey him.
