We Should Destroy The Probe -- Nobody Ever Listens To Worf

"We must destroy it!"
"No means no Mister Worf."
*probe proceed to cripple the most advanced starship and costs the lives of at least four people*
"Wow thank god we learned about this amazing thing. Good thing we didn't destroy it."
In all seriousness: I understand the Federation wants to study and diplomacy is the go to, but it bugs me when something clearly hostile is handled 'delicately' because they HAVE to learn or some regulation that they have to follow to the letter. I love them both, but Janeway and Picard I think sometimes tried too many alternatives before taking action. Kirk on the other hand would try peacefully once and then not risk his crew further. Sisko and Archer both had more Kirkish approaches to new situations (Sisko punched Q for example). Archer even got in trouble for being to aggressive and stirring the pot as pot were (I see him as a mix of Kirk and Picard IMO).
TL;DR In space, you need to find a balance between listening to your inner warrior and explorer.
