Just a counter-point -- In CA there are FFL (mom and pop, some literally run out of their home) that you can ship the gun to. I have had a wonderful experience with someone, super friendly, great person. I ordered online, it was shipped to them, along with ammo. They administered the test (asked if I studied), and did all the paperwork, and got my ammo.
I highly recommend this route, and then taking classes. Yes laws are strict here, but you can still defend yourself in your home, no problem. If shit hits the fan, you'll know. Stay in your home and secure as much as possible. HIGHLY unlikely that someone would go through all the trouble to get in just to get to one person...but if that happens, the law 100% is in your favor if you are protecting your life.
Whether to get a gun or not depends on whether it'll help you sleep at night, and how likely you think you'd need it.
