Should we see a large VR surge in the coming years?

IMO, technologies that make you super human do well, but VR actually makes you more human so it won't take off.

What do I mean by that? Well, people tend to like to watch edited movies. The shots are all quick, the angles are all covered, and the stories are condensed considerably; therefore, the viewer doesn't have to do much work. If you replace the edited video with a a 360 camera and VR headset, now the viewer has to do work. It's like moving backwards with your superhuman abilities.

I think AR will take off, and I'm personally a little afraid of it for privacy reasons. But I do also wonder when are we going to hit the point when technology becomes too much? We all know AR is going to put advertisements on everything. Are people going to put up with that just so they can see the names of people above their heads, or have turn-by-turn directions overlayed in front of you (isn't just being told to turn right enough?)... Also, in regards to privacy concerns, how will society function when everyone is wearing a camera on their face? Time will tell... I think in the short term, neither technologies will live up to their hype, but in the medium term, maybe AR glasses will be the norm for a few decades before something else comes along.
