‘This should not be normalised’: Why musicians are cancelling tours to protect their mental health

Well I think there’s something to be said about making that kind of commitment.

The criticism towards the artist here would be, not that they cancelled for mental health reasons, but they committed to something they weren’t sure if they could handle.

Or had a hard time saying no ““That weekend we were playing a castle with The Flaming Lips,” Smith says. “It was a dream come true. You feel ungrateful saying you can’t do it.””

The conservation about mental health should have occurred well before they got to the point that it has this much impact.

Your choice to overextend yourself, is just that. YOUR choice. I think that if you decide to make your living on the will of the public, then you have a higher burden of responsibility. I do want to be clear here though that the responsibility I’m referring to is being more cognizant about the stresses of work before making commitments and not the choice to protect mental health.

I will freely admit that the very people who want to criticize artists for cancelling seem to be the same group of people who are the motivation behind such relentless schedules. Bit of a catch-22 here. They complain they don’t get enough opportunities to see them and then complain when they get overwhelmed by trying to accommodate so many people.

This is the stuff that makes me never want to be high-profile in any facet.
