Should nurses show up early before report to look up patient info?

I show up around 30 minutes to look up patients. One reason for that is that I’m picky about reports I get from nurse leaving and just like to hear significant events. My morning handoff report to the other nurse is usually just “I read the chart, tell me what I need to know” and 2-5 minutes later, we are done.

I know it’s an unpopular opinion here but it’s my routine. That doesn’t mean I start my shift immediately seeing patients. I’m done with report by usually 715-720. Then I spend 15-20 minutes looking at my stocks. Then I go to the bathroom to cry for all my bad YOLOs. Maybe rehydrate or calorie up. And then I eventually see patients at around 745-815ish.

For me and what I tell students, everybody’s routine is different. If you feel better coming in early to research patients, go for it. If you are more the come in at 7 type, do it.
