Should I pay $99 to the apple store to transfer my data to my new computer, or is it doable myself?

I appreciate the thoughtful response! In all fairness though, is desk space a great excuse for the high price? I'm not sure about the uni you work at, but most apple stores I've been to at least appear to have a large amount of space in the back. And if not, surely that's some poor foresight on Apple's part not to have enough storage area to let computers sit? On top of that, it seems like given a relatively easy task like data migration, the majority of Apple employees could do the job. It doesn't require a higher up tech to monitor things constantly.

I definitely understand not all cases are the same and some computers will take more manual labor than others. But, as a customer, I personally would rather be told upfront, "if all goes well and we don't run into any issues, it will cost $x. If we have to do anything out of the norm, it will be an extra $y per/hour" as opposed to this pricey fixed cost. Maybe that's just me though.

I'm sure for some people it's worth the cost...I guess I just wouldn't even consider forking over that much for something I could do easily myself. My initial comment was in the context of OP asking if it was worth $100 when he was pretty tech savvy and could figure it out himself and things kind of unraveled as people started to respond haha.
