Should you place more doubt/skepticism on your beliefs if they predictably align with the demographic description of you?

(disclaimer: I'm not fully awake...so forgive me if this isn't terribly well-expressed).

I'm not sure I would say that we should put more doubt on the beliefs that match the ones we are/were surrounded by. However, I do think it is more important that we examine them. I say "examine" because, to me, saying "doubt" and "skepticism" imply a certain amount of rejection of said beliefs. I think it's important we examine them and then decide if we want to accept, reject, or modify the beliefs.

You also asked if people should just automatically adjust these beliefs in the direction of moderation. I don't think anything in the extreme is helpful...for example, I don't believe in racism, but I also don't believe in extreme anti-racism (or any other extreme opposite you want to fill in there). Anyone I've ever met that's extremely anti-racist is usually very hateful towards racist people. I don't think that helps anything and is just perpetuating the very values they are against. That being said, going with moderation on all these beliefs, would be using moderation in the extreme. There really is no "right" and "wrong" - there's only what is right and wrong for each of us, and we must each decide that on our own.

I also think it's important to note that we can never really, truly examine our own beliefs. Because even those examinations are flawed with whatever biases we hold. Utimately all the thinking and decisions we make during said examination is based on our own perspectives. As humans, we all have our own perspectives based on experiences, environment, genetics, (etc. etc). We will always view everything through those lenses. We can become more aware of the lenses we hold, and maybe shift them...but then you're really only replacing them with other lenses. Enrique Zalvadir is an Organization Development scholar-practitioner that has written about this. He calls it the Unique Cultural Lens. I recommend checking it out. It really relevant to some of the questions you pose.
