There is a potential that lightning will strike you down the next time you go outdoors, yet I don't see you carrying around a lightning deflector. I understand your point. Personally I much prefer seeing children grow up in an environment where they don't have to think about carrying guns, or the snowball's chance in hell of encountering violence for the matter.

From my point of view safety is much more a feeling than it is a status of being. You are never "safe" from everything that can happen, so you're better of worrying about the things you can control and work together as a society to minimize the risks you can't control. Violence is very much in that latter category. That way you can live your entire life feeling safe, even though you know that there are horrible incidents out there.

Maybe a gun helps you sleep sound at night but I reckon most people where I live would feel much less secure knowing that there is a real firearm in the vicinity, instead of feeling safe knowing that a never-before encountered bad guy would get loaded up with lead.
