Why should I or should I not move to Pittsburgh?

I will give you some negatives. (The positives are the same as any other city: good people, good food, good parks, good music, good sports)

First, the traffic is one of the worst in the nation per capita. I believe we rank 5th or 6th in time and money spent/wasted in traffic. The top 4 are major cities (think LA and NYC). My wife's commute is 15 miles, it takes her about an hour in stop and go traffic. I am a PennDOT sub contractor and I can tell you that there is really no way the traffic will ever improve in the next 5 to 10 years.

Second, the housing market slightly outside of pittsburgh is being soaked up by commercial builders such as Ryan Homes, and the kin. Cheap houses build on small lots, sold at higher prices. I spent years as a soils tech dealing with these houses. a medium sized family home is quite expensive, 300k to 550k depending on the school district. House can be had for 150k to 350k, but they are often also on small lots (due to hills) and built during the steel boom. Of course there are exceptions here and there.

The only solution I would offer would be to work in the city and live in the city. That way a bike or bus could be taken to work. But again, houses will start at 250k in a decent neighborhood and may require work.
