Should I get Super Mario 3D Land or Super Smash Bros 3ds?

If you want a game that can last a long itme Smash Bros. wins hands down.

Smash has hundreds of collectibles to earn and dozens of challenges to surmount. There are over 700 trophies to find and new moves that you can find for your characters, plus outfits. The game has a excellent and massive soundtrack that gets even bigger with unlocks. There are also short demos of classic games which are kind of sad and pointless, but they're something to collect.

There are a bunch of different single player modes that offer different ways to play from straight up fighting to scenarios that require you to do completely different things to stadium events that are about highscores (although the game uses a stupid reverse leaderboard that tells you how many people you're ahead of rather than how many you're behind so you really don't know where you stand and there's less encouragement to improve.

There are also 140 challenges that encourage you to play these modes at harder levels and with new characters you might not have otherwise tried. They start really easy and you'll unlock a lot by accident at first, but they eventually get super hard.

There's also Smash Tour, but it sucks.

Plus even without friends for multiplayer online mode is still active and offers an endless lineup of skilled challengers to prove to you that no matter how good you think you are there's someone better than you so there's potentially an endless learning curve there.

That being said Super Mario 3D World is a great platformer and where Smash is ultimately a game with no set goal and you have to find your reason for playing to a certain degree 3D World gives you the satisfaction of having a goal of getting to the end of a game. Sometimes that's more satisfying then being given tools to mess around with and having the freedom to do what you will with them. Plus there are a lot of stages and extra worlds to play through once the main game is beat. Some of the levels get really tough. I probably put about thirty hours into 3D World before I was done so it's not like it lacks for content.
