Shovel Knight will get a price increase to $40 by Dec 10th

The only people doing that are the people who already own it, or will impulse buy it now. Those are the people most likely to come in and express their unwavering support.

Plenty of AAA games have done this with game of the year editions becoming the only option. Main difference being that they don't just auto upgrade people. You tend to see neither outrage or unwavering support in those cases.

While I do own it, I don't condone forced DLC like this. I think they absolutely should do modular pricing and just give away the DLC if they want to. I find it really hard to justify. There is such a thing as too much sometimes and even if something is worth it, you don't want all the bells and whistles if you're not even sure you'll use them.
