I'd probably feel sorry for them if they really gave it their all and it fell flat, but it really doesn't seem like they did. I didn't really have any problems with the plot points that they gave us, it's just that I felt like the writing was very much rushed. The show definitely could have benefited from having a couple more episodes to make the White Walker battle last a bit longer, maybe give Dany a bit more time to go mad, give Euron a bit more time to do things, and maybe even give Jon a bit more time to think about killing Dany.

Oh, and what do you know, HBO actually offered to give them more episodes but they turned it down, allegedly because they just wanted to be done with Game of Thrones and work on their new Star Wars trilogy.
