Show that draws you in right away/first episode? Or at least doesn't make you roll your eyes in the first 5 minutes

If you're open to any genre, Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko is a lesser known but really great slice of life in my opinion. You'll see me use the word "absurd" a lot, mostly because I can't think of a better word to describe it. However, I do not mean the type of absurdity that occurs in animes like Nichijou or Gintama. Anyway...

For starters, I loved the animation right away; it was so well done and is aesthetically gorgeous - try to watch it in HD if you can, it makes a big difference. Every once in a while, I had to pause the show, sit back, and just take it all in. Here's one of the most popular scenes as a wallpaper.

The beginning starts like most other slice-of-life animes, but takes a bit of an absurd turn by the end of the first episode...one that made me curious and want to continue watching, at least. The story continues to remain a bit abstract right until the end, but I found it to be refreshing.

I also love the characters - they're all so different than what you'd normally expect. The MC cares a lot about his youth but doesn't take people's nonsense (he's usually the straight-man, at least with his family). Then there's his cousin and aunt, whom he lives with, who are both ridiculous in their own way. But their nonsense has a far deeper meaning...I'll leave it at that. The two classmates he interacts with are also very unique characters. I know those are awful descriptions, but I don't want to give too much away. Half the fun of this anime is getting to know the characters.

In general, this anime perfectly rides the very fine line between absurd and realistic, both in its story and characters, and has wonderful art. It has a fine balance between comedy and seriousness as well, and it definitely made me think a lot about the universe. I've watched it 3 times, and after writing this, I think I'm going to watch it again haha.
