Shows where a side character is so much more developed than the protagonist that he unexpectedly takes over stuff you'd think the protagonist would get?

I always adored Xiaolin Shodown as a kid for how it developed Raimundo's character - he had the most development out of any character in the series, betrayed everyone, came back, and all around learned the most about himself and how to grow as a person. Compared to him, the protagonist, while also having some growth just didn't grow as much and wasn't as interesting to watch. So watching Raimundo actually save the day at the end of the series and be named leader at the end was like "Whoa holy shit."

It's as if the WWE, in peak "gotta make Reigns look strong" era decided "You know what NAH" and pushed someone the fans loved instead. It was such a pleasant surprise.
