Sightings of rare oarfish in Japan raise fears of earthquake and tsunami

It's good to point this out, but it isn't a problem as long as it's presented honestly, like that. There are other instances of people seeing patterns in nature that are very difficult to explain scientifically due to either lack of practicality or lack of interest. The way mammals tend to alert to serious impending storms is a good example. We have a partial understanding of this now, I think, but for most of our history we were trusting the anxiety reactions of animals as a good indicator that bad weather was coming, because we could see the trend without understanding why.

I'd rather hear from the locals about it than CNN, if I were trying to speculate as to whether it's in fact an observation of a trend, or just a superstition. I think it's more /r/mildlyinteresting than /r/worldnews
