I have a silent class.

I do too. This is my first time in well over a decade of teaching that I have a silent class. It's odd, I teach a difficult subject, there should be questions. I often engage in class discussions and rely on student participation to keep the class going. I'll prompt a question and no one will answer, they look down at their desks and you can almost hear them breathing. I'll complete a fun demonstration showing them something mind boggling they've never seen before then try to ask them questions about what they saw... I'm left with crickets. This class is mid-morning, I don't understand the lack of participation. Has their phone use and social isolation created a selectively mute generation? Can it get worse? I sure hope not.
