Similar to Food Not Bombs, how about Care Not Cures (x-post from /r/disability)

The criticism that we're ableist is not true at all. We are determined to recast disability as something beyond frameworks of tragedy, inspiration porn, conspicuous prayer and charity opportunities, and capitalistic reductions of people to marginal production value. Sunaura Taylor has written an incredible exposition on disability. I behoove anybody, but especially anybody with a disability, and most especially anybody of a leftist stance, to research the social model of disability. As Taylor notes:

Despite advances, both in theory and in practice, disability rights remain some of the last to be thought about, and as a result are typically some of the first to be forgotten when it comes time for cutbacks or budget “reform.” The disability movement has failed as of yet to convince people that our existence in society is valid and essential. The public remains unconvinced that our struggle is actually theirs as well; advocates for the disabled are de facto fighting for the rights of the elderly, and many of the services they are demanding will help their able-bodied counterparts as well, both directly (for example, when a worker become temporarily impaired or by providing able-bodied individuals with more options as they inevitably age) and indirectly (they may enjoy peace of mind because a loved one is living happily in their own home with the help of an attendant). We have failed to get our point across; but what is our point? Perhaps it is best expressed in the idea that disability is a political issue not a personal one.

What we should agree on as members of the far left is not that we should become more interdependent as a social species, but that we always already are interdependent, and that all illusions, fetishisms, and reifications to the contrary are to be smashed. What's more, on a personal level, I abide by an ethics of care. The point is everybody needs to be cared for even after they've been cured.

To the effect that we are (to become) a non-profit, it is simply so that we may provide communities the resources they need to effectively change material conditions. Ultimately though, the idea is about ideas. Care Not Cures is not supposed to be exclusive to any organization; anybody should be able to take up its cause and implement it in their community. Our symbols are your symbols inasmuch as our hopes are your hopes.
