Clicked here for the car was not disappointed. The GLI is an awesome car. I love them. Almost as much as I love the GTI. The automatic transmission in this car is absolutely wonderful. It is called the DSG, or direct shift gearbox. It is a dual clutch transmission that is wonderfully smooth and offers a super engaging paddle shifter mode. It honestly feels like a cvt in regular automatic mode. It's almost as good as Porsches PDK. Which in fact was built off of the DSG and Porsche does what they do best perfected it. I would go so far to say the DSG is the second best automatic transmission currently available and the best thats not outrageously expensive.

Whats so nice about the DSG is that it made dual clutch transmissions popular and mainstream. It turned the automatic GTI from a slow lifeless machine into something brilliant. It also appeared in the mk 5 gti which some say is the best GTI ever made and everyone will agree its what heralded a new era for the GTI after two crappy generations. Ugly terrible fat slow things the mk3 and mk4.

People say that an automatic transmission is gross but the DSG isn't. It is a wonderful piece of German engineering and anyone who calls it gross or bad should be ashamed.
