Simple Questions - February 14, 2021

I'm on a Z170 board with a Skylake i5 6500. I was thinking of rebuilding into an mATX case (on ATX currently), but tracking down a used 100- or 200- series motherboard is so blah that I think it's time to just upgrade.

I do occasional 1080p gaming but mostly these days it's photo editing, web browsing, and audio recording. So actually, I don't really have to upgrade at all but getting a new CPU seems appealing. I was thinking of getting a Z490 board and a non-K chip (like the i5 10400), just to take advantage of faster RAM and the possibility of upgrading to an 11th-gen overclockable chip down the line. But I know there's no guarantees with future-proofing for Intel considering what they did in the past to 100- and 200- chipset users.

Maybe I should just go cheap as possible, a non-Z board? The savings are negligible if I'm going to get the upgrade bug in a year and want an 11th-gen CPU, though. The 10600k looks nice and I already have a decent cooler I can reuse.

Meh.
