Simple Questions - July 08, 2019

So Newegg was having a 20% off Ebay sale, so I bought this for $240 (also had some Ebay bucks expiring soon, which brought the price down further): CMW64GX4M8C3000C15W, or CORSAIR Vengeance RGB Pro 64GB (8 x 8GB) DDR4 3000 CL15. It wasn't bad timing, since I'll have some memory-intensive analyses to perform soon.

I do have some questions though:

1) Was it a good deal? RAM prices seem to be in freefall, but I'll have some need for more memory soon and have a white build and the RGB looked nifty so... I also have a lot of random RGB corsair fans, so they should hopefully synchronize nicely.

2) What's the default behavior of the RGB? These'll be going into linux / macOS machines, and iCUE software for those seems to only control peripherals.

3) I've never bought an 8-pack of RAM before -- it's more likely to hit rates speeds than e.g. four 2-packs, right?

4) I might split this out into e.g. two sets of 4-sticks, since atm I don't have anything that supports 8 DIMMs. I know some sticks OC better than others, so is there any way to figure out which of these 8 are the best overclockers without trying each of them (or 8 choose 4 = 70 combinations, in case individual performance does not predict group performance)?
