It really depends on the rest of the rig.

If you compare CPU/Mobo in isolation, yes, it may not be worth it, but the thing is, unless you are literally just replacing CPU/Mobo, you should take the rest of the rig into account. Comparing $480 to $500+mobo makes $480 look like a much better deal, it may not appear so if it costs $1000 for the rest (as example, you'd comparing $1480 vs $1500+mobo).

Comparing the cost effectiveness of Intel VS AMD by comparing the cost of their respective CPU only is like comparing the cost effectiveness of two cars by comparing the cost of replacing their engines, cars, like computers, is sum of its parts, and so prices must be compared as a sum, not individually.
