I would agree that it depends. SSE isn't not old at all, so if anything, most SSE mods should work fine. I'm pretty sure SSE hasn't been updated or any updates for it finished awhile ago. Oldrim is a different matter, although I think for most of the mods with issues, the comments will give it away or a search in this subreddit. Skyrim in general is a very popular game, so most mods should have some kind of replacement if they were very popular and were broken or something. If you're talking about Oldrim, try to sort the mods for the last 2-4 years or so by endorsements or downloads rather than by all time if you're worried. The popular, old mods should still be there if they work is my assumption.

Off the top of my head, for Oldrim, I like Vivid Weathers. It comes with it's own optional enb so I thought that sounded like a good combination.
