Since we don't hear much about it, Ladies of Reddit, what was your worst "meet the mom" story?

oooh boy. The first time I met my now mother in law was rough. First, my then boyfriend/now husband failed to mention that she's bipolar, & a hoarder. I have Asberger's & have a lot of trouble with sensory overload, so when I walked into a house just completely & utterly full I nearly died. I literally couldn't hear anything that was being said, the sights & smells were so overwhelming I could just hear a high buzzing in my head. It was like a Bed Bath & Beyond except everything is old & gross & the air smells like mold. I tried very hard to hide my shock & dismay, but I'm terrible at hiding my feelings so I'm pretty sure it showed.

She's also a narcissist & sees her sons as just extensions of herself. She has diligently tried to destroy every other relationship my husband or his brother has ever had & mostly succeeded. The day after I met her for the first time, she called my husband & said that I'd stolen all her vicodin from a recent knee replacement.

Last straw was when we had my husband's entire family in our tiny apartment & she sat there talking shit about me to her other son. Everyone could hear her, which was of course exactly what she wanted.

Lucky for me, my own mother was an abusive malignant narcissist, so I know how to deal with them. I will never interfere in the relationship my husband has with his mother, it's not really my business other than to be supportive of him. that said, I haven't seen her once since that day 4 years ago, she is not allowed in my home.

Don't fuck with the Irish, we neither forgive nor forget. It's super unhealthy & that's what all the drinking & sad plays are about!
