Site Cleanup

We started calling it the “Broom Crew”. I know it silly, but we needed to reinforce that daily clean up is still required and this crew is here for general debris. They are not to empty trash carts and drywall scraps and random skids. They are only to sweep everywhere. As far as participation, never let anyone slide, enforce it from day one. If one sub doesn’t show then the next guy will think it isn’t fair and he won’t show up either. It will absolutely fall apart. I’ve been fighting this for years and have tried different methods (making the foremen sweep, back charges, shutting job down) only thing that works is consistent and fair enforcement. The only thing different that I‘be tried that I’d some success is what I called “Community Clean”. Major subs like MEP and Drywaller all provide 1 guys, and I provide one lead man. This small crew brings carts and several brooms and when they reach a floor all work stops and everyone in the floor cleans. Usually take 10-15 minutes, then the skeleton crew picks up the piles and dumps carts, collects brooms and heads to the next floor.

Also, i usually put a lead laborer in charge of the crew, though I’ve seen interns lead it before I don’t think it is effective, and tell him cleanliness is his responsibility. If the job isn’t clean after his “crew” gets done then he has to clean it himself.

Sorry that was long winded, I have a lot of opinions about clean job sites.
