Size of Afghanistan in comparison to Europe

Yes, we did all these things but our premise always was to minimise our presence there. The Bundeswehr took parts of Taliban held territory and moved on and the Taliban moved right back into these territories. People there knew all along to better not cooperate with the foreigners or bad things would happen to them. Germany always tagged along with the US but never actually did what would've been necessary to hold the freed territories. There never were any initiatives to reassure the people in our sector that we would protect them from the Taliban and ensure strong institutions would arise. I remember when I was serving (not in Afghanistan) that almost everyone looked down on assignments to train the ANA. I don’t blame the Bundeswehr though. The way I see it the Germans and in extension our elected officials simply never cared enough to take matters into their hands and provide what would’ve been necessary to ensure we win this war. Minimise costs and keep the topic off the table was what mattered.
