[Slate] The NBA Is Running a Training Camp in the Middle of One of the World’s Worst Humanitarian Atrocities

Absolutely false.

You’re attempting to minimize the impact and heinousness of what is happening at the border by highlighting that “some” are trying to address it despite the fact the issue is not even close to resolved. It’s a way to say “It’s bad, but it’s not as bad as something else that’s just like it”. It’s a cute and cruel way to ignore the issue through sheer oversimplification. The two situations are far more alike than similar in than people who, through no real fault, are being detained, abused, and/or worse. The situation at the border is not about incompetence and stupidity - it’s a deliberate action that is endorsed by a majority of the US government.

My argument doesn’t rely on any logical fallacy. I’m literally comparing two equal crimes in two separate geographies. You’re saying the two aren’t alike to whitewash one as a measure of “incompetence and stupidity” and the other as a result of deliberate cruelty. They are both the result of deliberate cruelty, and it’s disrespectful to the victims to underplay the cruelty of the US situation.

And if someone is going to argue that the NBA should refuse to operate in China, then it should take the same moral stance in the US
