Slight resentment over understanding medication in NA.

I'm an NA member and I've been supporting someone dealing with a similar issue. It has really been bumming me out how NA members respond to things like this. In general, and in my opinion, I think 12 step groups in general are VERY slow to change, even amongst strong evidence supporting change.

In terms of drug replacement therapy, NA World service put out a bulletin in 1996 regarding their position on it to treat addiction. I think this is what fuels some ignorance regarding the drug that is supporting you, OP. Here's an excerpt:

"We make a distinction between drugs used by drug replacement programs and other prescribed drugs because such drugs are prescribed specifically as addiction treatment. Our program approaches recovery from addiction through abstinence, cautioning against the substitution of one drug for another. That's our program; it's what we offer the addict who still suffers. However, we have absolutely no opinion on methadone maintenance or any other program aimed at treating addiction. Our only purpose in addressing drug replacement and its use by our members is to define abstinence for ourselves."

This bulletin, in my opinion, would apply to mind altering chemicals used to treat addiction. What makes me sad is that it seems to be, unfortunately, contrary to research. Also, individual members use this to judge or ostracize others who are using drug replacement therapy to stay clean. People who could, and do, benefit from participation.

The person I was supporting is on suboxone and has decided not to attend NA anymore. That makes me sad. I understand though.

OP, I sincerely hope you continue with participation and educating people who are judgmental and/or ignorant. I'm glad you've got a sponsor and are working the steps, sounds like you are on the right path for YOUR recovery, which is all that matters. Big hugs and keep coming back.
