Is the former tenant bringing you to court? or a collective you including your Mom's boyfriend?

I'm not sure it was within your write for you personally to dispose of the trampoline, so I would make sure not to incriminate yourself. If you're the only one going to court with this guy, it may in your best interest to just say you're the new tenant and have no thing to do with the trampoline.

To answer your question regarding property abandonment:

Looks like NY doesn't have any state law in regards to abandoned property. You can ask the Landlord to see what the lease said about it.

If the lease remained silent on abandoned property, there are some instructions here that may have put the Landlord in a better position here.
