Smartest way to split rent with SO?

My husband and I first moved in together during college and our finances have been set up like this since before we were married, and never changed it: -our own separate credit card, -our own separate checking account, - our own separate savings account. -One shared checking account for bills. we pay in an equal amount into this account per pay check -Once we graduated college we set up a shared savings account where we deposit the same agreed upon amount per check.

We split everything 50/50, but we take comfort in knowing we have each other's back if one of us were to lose our job. The only thing that's changed is we've bumped the amount we put into our shared checking account because we're expecting twins in 2 months. This has worked great for us for the past 7 years.

My biggest piece of advice is if you open a shared checking account, make sure both your names are on the account, and you both get your own debit card.
