smh

My sarcasm seems to have eluded you. Would you like some help tracking it down?

I was just trying to post a sarcastic comment to shine a soft light on something I found ironic but you took me way to seriously. So I guess I'll submit my counter argument.

First of all, no need to strawman me. I didn't say they were equivalent. The basis of my joke was that they were comprable. That people use their expensive and stylish builds to garner attention from others. Much like people attempt to grab attention with their Nikes, Adidases (Adidi?). I never said anything as boldly asinine as "the scope is identical". Nobody would. You read what you wanted to read.

Secondly, you mentioned yourself that PCs are a relatively new medium for use as a status symbol and suggested that hashtags should be used to measure this. You are absolutely right, PC builds are not a mainstream status symbol. They tend to be more relegated towards communities like you said. So of course they will not have the same scope and success as long time mainstay status symbols like shoes. Measuring via hashtags is problematic though for two reasons. The bulk of PC communities is on sites like Reddit which do not put importance into hashtags. Also, how many times have you seen people wearing shoes on instagram. Compare that to how many times you've seen people wear their pcs. People simply post more pictures of themselves and their friends (and presumably clothes and shoes) than they do pictures of their gaming rigs. So of course there will be a dip in hashtag representation.

Finally. Just a simple assumption. I would assume most people on this sub would be more impressed by someone with a 2080 ti than they would be by someone with yeezys or a bape hoodie.

Status symbols are subjective. They will work on some and be lost on others. Just like humor.
