Don't get a dog if you can't deal with some chewed up furniture. A dogs freedom from being put in a cage (as any animals) trumps a chewed up sneaker. Put your fancy shoes in a drawer and have some rooms the dog isn't allowed in. Easy peasy and the dog and fucking get up in the night and have walk around.
