Snowden: We are becoming too dependent on Facebook as a news source; "To have one company that has enough power to reshape the way we think, I don’t think I need to describe how dangerous that is"

The semi-literate, who can read but not with any critical skill; that is, those who are sufficiently (but merely) functionally literate to perform simple day-to-day tasks but not read, say, Hegel or Kant; even if they had access to or knew about better quality sources, they are too lazy or lack the intellectual culture to want to take the time to read or listen anyway. So, even though there are still some independent news organizations or programs - ones like Democracy Now (http://www.democracynow.org/) or Against the Grain (https://kpfa.org/program/against-the-grain/) - the hoi poloi don't care for it will take too much time and effort and sustained concentration to follow along and understand.

As the media saturates the environment perpetually via social media platforms, so does the message such groups with to have saturate the minds of those who can't or won't think for themselves. The knowledge that this is so is not new:

"...the actions of men proceed from their opinions, and in the well governing of opinions consisteth the well governing of men's actions..." Thomas Hobbes, The Leviathan,Chapter XVIII: Of the Rights of Sovereigns by Institution.

Unfortunately, technology today permits such 'well governing' like never before.
