Snubbed by Canada, Germany turns to Qatar for its gas

Come on NP, just building the infrastructure necessary to export Canadian gas from the East Coast to Germany is probably going to take a minimum of 5 to 10 years and Germany needs the gas today.

We need to build pipeline across multiple province who all have to run their own separate environmental assessment. By law, Quebec and Ontario governments cannot sign off on a project like that without an environmental assessment.

Then there is the issue of Indigenous people who must be consulted, otherwise we are facing court challenges, possible highway or railroad blockades and other type of demonstration.

Then expropriating the required land.

Then financing the bloody thing.

Then we have to build the damn things:

  • Thousands of km of pipelines with substations along the way.
  • Gas liquefaction plants to turn it liquid.
  • Deep water port infrastructure for LNG shipping.

The thing is that, in 5 years when the infrastructure is ready, Germany might not even need the gas anymore.
