Some Freshman Questions

Junior SE! Here we go:

  1. Freshman year, you should have quite a lot a free time. As you progress (and especially get more involved with student orgs, which I highly recommend), you'll find you have less free time because it's transformed into doing events with said orgs, working on projects with classmates, study nights with friends, etc. I've found that while I have less "free time", it's at least enjoyable and beneficial. I don't really notice the amount of time I put into either just because it's become routine. But get your work done early, don't procrastinate, and you should be fine!
  2. I knew nothing beyond a smidge of C++ coming in, you'll be fine. Especially with knowing a bit of programming and some EE stuff.
  3. Didn't live in the dorms.
  4. There are tons of places to eat and hang out around town, you'll most likely figure them out. One place does $1 burgers on a certain day. Take a day or two to explore. If you were here during the summer, there would be even more festivals. During the school year, our student life AND student orgs in general do really good programming - tons of events every week to attend. Get involved with an org or two, and you'll be easily entertained, and meet some cool people (I humbly suggest MSOE Game Development Club :) )
  5. My viewpoint is probably skewed because I'm female, but I think the ratio difference is getting smaller. While it is definitely true that many girls drop out early, a fair amount stick around. Otherwise, the people here are your average breakdown - nerds, jocks, etc. While we are definitely one of the geekier schools, there's still a wide spread of people here.
  6. Speech and all the HU/SS classes are easy. When it's time to pick classes for winter quarter, ask around to see who's recommended (both for HU/SS and for your core classes as well)

Good luck, hope to see you next year!
